Term Begins - Ceremony for Grade One Students
Canadian Foreign Language School-Agile (CLS-A)
On the morning of September 1st, CLS-A held a special day for the new Grade One students, "The First Writing Ceremony". On this day, CLS-A's administrative staff waited at the gate of school, greeting every new student warmly. All the students also received a gift from the school, wishing then all a great first day at school. Principal Zhang gave small presents to the children who got off the bus.
The host announced the activity would be divided into five parts, "Receiving uniforms, putting on a red dot, serving tea to teachers, beating a drum and then cursive writing".
Our school's music teacher, Lu Binke, led the Hong Xiao Orchestra who performed a rendition of “Tantanka,” sharing the school’s dedication to classical Chinese courses.
Prior to the activity, CLS-A's Principle Zhang made a sincere speech explaining that "The First Writing Ceremony" uses the most traditional methods to wish our children good fortune in becoming pillars of society. Principle Zhang also thanked the parents for choosing our school. On our campus we pursue free growth, cultural awareness and social responsibility and our children not only learn the Chinese traditional culture, but can also broaden their horizons.
She also sincerely thanked the teachers of CLS-A for their careful preparation saying, "Today we use this form of traditional culture to help our children experience Chinese culture and to learn more from western cultures as well. We are happy and excited to have these new students.”
Part 1 - Dress code
Parents see children in their new school uniforms with eyes were full of hope and expectation.
Part 2 - Give a red dot
Educational Bureau Director Wu (Panyu District) came to give red dots for students to put on their foreheads. He also brought best wishes for the students.
Part 3 – Students Serve Tea to Teachers
Students are taught to properly serve tea which they then serve to their teachers.
Part 4 – Beating the Drum
Children band on a traditional drum for wisdom before becoming the newest grade one class of CLS-A.
Part 5 - Cursive Writing
Teacher, Sun Xiliang, wrote the character "人" , to exemplify the correct method before students returned to the classroom to write their first "人.” It’s suggested that parents keep this "人” as a symbol of the begging of the child’s life.
At the end of the ceremony, Director Peng of the Moral Education Department delivered a summary saying that the number of students attending this first writing ceremony was the most students during the four years at the school, including 200 students. He also said the quality was the highest with the Educational Bureau’s Director coming to the school to present red dots, which shows that the government’s attached importance to this non-government funded school. Lastly, the children's behaviour was the best he’d seen with all children sitting straight, reading loudly and smiling happily.
Director Peng hopes our students can recite " Sishu" within three years and hopes the children make friends with sages and men of virtue who can be found in classical works.
